The iPad has long ceased to be just an entertainment device. With the continuous iteration of iPadOS, especially the addition of Stage Manager, its capability in multitasking has improved dramatically.
Whether you are a student or a professional, mastering these system-level interaction tricks will double your productivity.
1. Flexibly Use “Split View”
This is the most basic and practical feature.
- How to trigger: While an app is open, tap the “three dots” icon at the top of the screen and select “Split View”.
- Scenarios: Browser on the left for research, Notion on the right for notes; or watching a video lecture on the left, writing a paper on the right.
- Tip: You can drag the middle divider to adjust the width ratio of the two apps (50<50>50> or 70<30>30>).
2. The Magic of “Slide Over”
The Slide Over window is a small window that floats above the main screen, perfect for holding “use and dismiss” utility apps.
- Recommended apps: Calculator, WeChat, Music Player, Dictionary.
- How to use: From any screen, swipe left from the right edge of the screen to bring up the Slide Over window. Swipe right again to hide it.
- Hidden trick: You can have multiple Slide Over windows open! Swipe left or right on the home indicator at the bottom of the Slide Over window to quickly switch between different Slide Over apps.
3. Master “Stage Manager”
If you are using an iPad Pro/Air with an M-series chip (or A12X/Z), this is your ultimate productivity weapon.
- Core logic: It no longer forces apps into full screen, but instead overlaps and resizes them like computer windows.
- Group management: You can group “Word + Browser” together, and “Lightroom + Files App” as another group. Tap the taskbar on the left to switch entire workflows with one click.
- External display: On M-series iPads, Stage Manager supports true external display extension (not just simple screen mirroring), giving you a dual-monitor office experience.
4. Quick Note
Inspiration is fleeting; you need the fastest way to record it.
- Gesture: Swipe inward from the bottom right corner of the screen using an Apple Pencil, or swipe up from the bottom right corner using your finger (needs to be enabled in Settings).
- Integration: When you bring up Quick Note in Safari, tap “Add Link,” and it will automatically insert the link of the web page you are currently viewing for easy backtracking.
5. Universal Control
If you own both a Mac and an iPad, this feature is the best demonstration of the Apple ecosystem.
- Seamless connection: Just place your iPad next to your Mac, and you can move your Mac’s mouse cursor directly onto the iPad screen!
- File transfer: No need for AirDrop; just use the mouse to drag an image from your Mac into the iPad’s Photos app, or drag a document from the iPad to the Mac desktop. This is true “productivity.”
Summary
Tools must not only be good to use, but you also must “know how to use them.” Don’t let your iPad become just a “productivity machine before purchase, Netflix screen after purchase” device. Try forcing yourself to use 1-2 of these tips in your daily work; after a week, you’ll find you can’t live without them.
